Scandinavian Warrior 10th century AD

Viking warriors, predominantly from Denmark and Norway brought fear and devastation to much of the British Isles, initially as pirate raiders and later as invaders. The image of the Norseman with horned or winged helmet is based on misinterpretation and romanticism and many wore little armour. The figure shown  represents a typical Scandinavian warrior of the 10th century, his only armour being a helmet of Scandinavian pattern with ‘spectacles’ and a small nasal to protect the face. Most of his defence is provided by his circular shield. He is armed with a single handed axe and sword. The axe was a favoured Viking weapon although many carried a spear. Over his woollen clothing this man wears a wolf skin cloak and he may Be one of the ‘Ulfeanhor’ or the wolf clad ones, warriors who disdained the use of body armour and were renowned for their ferocity and lackof fear in battle.
